A little routine keeps your pieces as brilliant as the day you got them.

Everyday cleaning

The best cleaner is also the gentlest: a bowl of warm water with a few drops of mild dish soap. Soak the piece for fifteen or twenty minutes, then brush gently behind and around the stone with a soft toothbrush — that's where the film hides and where most of the sparkle is lost. Rinse thoroughly (over a bowl, not an open drain) and pat dry with a lint-free cloth.

Do this every couple of weeks for a ring you wear daily and you'll be amazed how much light returns. Skip harsh household cleaners, bleach, and abrasive toothpaste — they can pit metal and damage certain stones.

When to take it off

A few habits prevent most of the damage we ever see:

• The gym and heavy lifting — gripping weights or bars can bend a band and loosen prongs.
• Cleaning with chemicals — bleach and ammonia attack alloyed metals; take rings off or wear gloves.
• Swimming and hot tubs — chlorine degrades gold and platinum alloys over time.
• Sleeping, gardening, and rough work — prongs snag on fabric and soil grinds in grit.

The simple rule: jewelry goes on last, after lotion and hairspray, and comes off first for anything strenuous or chemical.

Storage

Store pieces separately, each in its own soft pouch or a lined compartment. This matters more than it sounds: a diamond is hard enough to scratch every other gem and metal it touches, so a jumble in one box means pieces quietly abrading one another. Keep them apart and they stay pristine.
